Hemorrhoids are cushions of tissue and varicose veins located in and around the rectal area. When they become inflamed, hemorrhoid can itch, bleed, and cause pain.
There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal and external. As the name suggests, internal hemorrhoids affect the internal hemorrhoidal veins; external hemorrhoids affect the internal hemorrhoidal veins.
Internal hemorrhoids occur higher up in the anal canal, out of sight. Bleeding is the most common symptom of internal hemorrhoid, and often the only one in mild cases
External hemorrhoids are visible-occurring out side the anus. They are basically skin-covered veins that have ballooned and appear blue. Usually they appear without any symptoms. When inflamed, however, they become red and tender
Sometimes, internal hemorrhoid will come through the anal opening when straining to move your bowels. This is called a prolapsed internal hemorrhoid; it is often difficult to ease back into the rectum, and is usually quite painful
When a blood clot forms inside an external hemorrhoid, it often causes Severe pain. This thrombosed external hemorrhoid can be felt as a firm, tender mass in the anal area, about the size of a pea
Dr. Susan Jewell - What causes hemorrhoids ?
What causes hemorrhoids ?
Hemorrhoids, also known as piles or commonly mis-spelt as hemroids, are mainly caused by unhealthy eating diet. Unhealthy eating diet includes inadequate intake of fibers and water. This would lead to difficult bowel movement. Straining would happen when you are trying to have a bowel movement. The increased pressure in the veins of your anus or rectum during straining causes hemorrhoid. This may happen if you're constipated or if you have diarrhea. It may also happen if you sit on the toilet too long, making the blood vessels leading to the rectum and around the anus widened, and the worst condition is the occurrence of bleeding around the anus.
Hemorrhoid can also be caused by obesity, heavy lifting or any other activity that caused you to strain.
In addition, excessive straining, rubbing, or cleaning around the anus may cause irritation with bleeding and/or itching, which may produce a vicious cycle of symptoms. Draining mucus may also cause itching
Pregnant women often get hemorrhoid because of the strain from carrying the baby and from giving birth.
What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?
Although many people have hemorrhoid, not all experience symptoms.
Internal Hemorrhoids
The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoid is bright-red blood covering the stool, on toilet paper, or in the toilet bowl. Other symptoms may include feeling vague anal discomfort, fullness after a bowel movement. Pain is not a common symptom.
However, an internal hemorrhoid may protrude through the anus outside the body, becoming irritated and painful. This is known as a protruding hemorrhoid.
External Hemorrhoids
Unlike internal hemorrhoids, which are usually not painful, external hemorrhoid can be quite painful. Additional symptoms may include bleeding and anal itching.
Symptoms of external hemorrhoid may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus that results when a blood clot forms. This condition is known as a thrombosed external hemorrhoid.
The symptoms of hemorrhoid during pregnancy are similar to those experienced by women who are not pregnant. They are based on the type of hemorrhoid that develops.
Actually hemorrhoids is not a dangerous disease or contagious, but if hemorrhoid allowed up to one week or more, or let the condition get worse and there are a lot of blood, the pain will become great.
DO NOT wait until your hemorrhoid condition in the toilet became very severe and very painful!
See your doctor if you notice bleeding to make sure the cause is hemorrhoid and not some other problem. Bleeding from your rectum or anus or bloody stools may be a sign of something more serious such as cancer.
